“There is a calf swinging” shows a black-and-white calf in a striped cap standing in the snow while beaded snowflakes fall thickly around.

What the picture shows

The calf is worked in black and white beads — a spotted back, dark horns, a pale muzzle — with a small necklace of brown beads at its neck. The ground is pale blue and scattered with dozens of white three-bead flowers that give the piece its relief. The edge is trimmed with white beads. The second part is a blue square with a knitted stocking in red and blue stripes and reindeer, also set in the snow.

The two pieces are sewn together with the padding inside and hung on a white ribbon. The result is soft and flat, so it stores easily in an ordinary box until next December. The cones, the string of lights and the turquoise box in the photo are styling props. The three-bead snowflakes repeat dozens of times — the best place to get your hand in. The pattern is in colour and printed straight on the canvas.
