Description

“Poppy” is a red poppy with four rounded petals and a black centre. In proportion the piece is square.

What the picture shows

The petals are worked in several reds, from light to deep garnet, with faceted red navette stones set between them to catch the light at an angle. The centre is black: sharp black stamens radiate from the middle and gold beads are scattered in a ring around them. The outline of the flower is dark red, and small dots of the same tone lie along the petal edges. Ten colours, but nine of them are reds and blacks, so the piece reads almost as a monochrome. The beads run in tight circles and the canvas print shows only in the gaps. The petals are not equal in width, so the flower looks alive rather than drawn with a compass.

The piece is square in proportion and symmetrical. The embroidery is cut out along the petal outline and mounted as a brooch; the stones, the pin and the backing are chosen separately. Because the flower is symmetrical, the second half is worked as a mirror of the first, and the black centre is left until last.
