Description

“Owl” is a tall, narrow brooch worked in eighteen colours. It is the busiest piece in the series: there is almost no quiet area in it.

What the picture shows

The owl sits facing the viewer, with pointed ear tufts and large white eyes in orange rims. Breast and wings are laid in wavy rows where orange, blue, green, white and wine beads alternate, standing in for feathers. A bronze loop runs down the middle like a pattern on the chest, and the feet are picked out in orange. The outline is worked in navy and burgundy. Eighteen colours give an almost carpet-like density, so the canvas underneath is nearly hidden — the print shows only as narrow strips between rows.

The piece is vertical and narrow, close to twice as tall as it is wide. The finished embroidery is cut out along the outline and mounted as a brooch; the pin and backing are chosen separately and are not in the kit. Eighteen colours on so small an area mean constant switching between shades, so it is worth working in good light and without hurry.
