Description

“Motif of the sun” is a patchwork square with an eight-pointed star in yellow, olive and brown.

What the picture shows

The design imitates patchwork: the canvas is printed as patches of different colours and the beads run in even rows exactly along the seams between them. Yellow beads outline the rays of the star, green ones the corner triangles, brown ones the small diamond at the centre. Those rows are what give the picture depth: the cloth stays flat while the seams stand up. The square is trimmed with a golden-green rim and hangs on a white ribbon. The second part of the work is a matching square with a pinwheel of yellow, olive and brown patches.

The pieces are sewn together with the padding inside and hung on the ribbon. This is interior decor rather than a tree ornament: squares like these look good in a group on a wall or on the handle of a sewing basket. The pattern is printed on the canvas in colour, so there are no squares to count. The scissors, daisies and linen napkin in the photo are styling props. The bead rows here are long and straight, so the piece fits into one or two evenings.
