Description

“Lotus” is a stylised lotus flower opened out like a fan, in a mint and lilac range. The drawing is ornamental rather than botanical.

What the picture shows

The central petal reaches upward and is worked in silvery lilac beads with a green core inside. Petals spread symmetrically on either side: pale lilac with a mauve middle first, then mint, then dark green at the outer edges. The whole flower is outlined in dark green and black, scattered with small dots. The lower edge is straight, as if the flower were standing on water. Thirteen colours are laid out as a mirror — the left half repeats the right exactly. Between the bead rows the canvas stays visible in places and supports the overall tone. The darkest beads are gathered along the outline, and it is they that hold the shape of the flower.

The embroidery is cut out along the outline and finished as a piece of jewellery; the beaded fringe with crystal drops, the pin and the backing are chosen separately. The mirrored drawing helps in the work: once the left half is done, the right repeats it row for row. The piece sits well on a dense fabric.
