Description

“Flower-de-luce” is a large iris on a black ground in a violet and pink range. The dark background makes the petals look lit from within.

What the picture shows

The petals open out from the centre: the upper two lift up, the lower ones fall in wide waves. Inside they are worked in lilac, mauve and pink beads with a pearly sheen, while orange and gold strokes run along the veins to mark the iris beard. The gaps between the petals are black, and the whole piece rests on that contrast. A row of gold beads lies along the lower edge. Fourteen colours, most of them shades of violet. The beads cover almost the entire field, and the canvas print is only guessed at in the narrow gaps.

The outline of the piece is irregular and follows the shape of the flower. The embroidery is cut along that edge and mounted as a brooch; the gold chain in the photo is not part of the kit, and neither are the pin and backing. The petals are worked in long arcs, so the rows here are longer than in the other pieces of the batch and need an even thread tension.
