Description

“By the Christmas Tree” shows a grey bunny sitting in the snow among green branches, red berries and knitted mittens.

What the picture shows

The bunny is left printed — only the white fur on its chest and its ears are underlined with matt beads. Around it, green needles are worked in two shades, along with red berries and mittens, and a band of snow in large white beads runs below. The pale blue ground carries printed trees and falling snow. The circle is trimmed with a pearly white rim and hangs on a white ribbon. The second part of the work uses the same blue base with a decorated tree full of coloured baubles and red presents beneath it.

Both pieces are sewn together with the padding inside and hung on the ribbon. The motif is calm, without any harsh red, so the ornament suits a pale tree as well as a branch in a basket. The pattern is printed on the canvas in colour. The cup of cocoa, the cones and the linen napkin in the photo are styling props. The berries and mittens are worked last — they add the red to the picture.
