South night – 1 shows pink roses flanking a small window that opens onto a moonlit sea and a laid table.

What the picture shows

A stem with four roses rises from the left and below: each is worked as a spiral from crimson to pale pink, with a white outline along the petal edges. The leaves are dark green and dense. In the rectangular inset on the right lies a blue landscape — moon, water, distant hills, a lantern and a round table under a turquoise cloth. The inset is outlined with a row of golden beads while the view itself stays as print. The beige ground with its embossed pattern is not stitched either. The 7 colours hold the contrast between the warm field and the cool blue inset. The roses come first, from the largest down to the buds, and they decide how much room is left for the inset. The golden outline of the window is done last — it has to lie straight or the view inside will look askew.
