Description

Happy Anniversary – 2 shows a clump of pansies: yellow and red flowers with black centres on an almost white field.

What the picture shows

There are five blooms, each turned towards the viewer: the petals are worked in yellow beads with an orange rim, while the two lower flowers are red, almost cherry; every centre is black and made from tiny beads. Stems and leaves are done in green over several rows, the leaves broad with a bronze midrib. Two buds sway above on thin curved stalks. The pale, faintly green ground stays as print on the canvas, and leaving it bare keeps the piece light. Of the 6 colours, three go into the flowers themselves. The black centres are worked first — they fix the place of every flower and keep the pansies from drifting. The petals then run from the centre outwards, row by row, with the buds left until the end.
