Description

Happy 8th of March (Women's Day) – 8 shows a figure eight built from flowers and leaves in the Petrykivka folk-painting manner, on a white field with a green border.

What the picture shows

The outline of the numeral is traced in golden beads and holds the whole composition together. Inside the loops sit red and pink flowers with yellow centres, a large pale pink aster in the lower ring, and small berries along the edges. The leaves are worked in two greens, from lime to grass, in long curving strips. Outside, the field is bordered by a green band with printed scrolls, which are not stitched — nor is the word in the lower loop. With only 5 bead colours the piece reads as graphic, with crisp lines instead of soft gradients. The golden outline of the numeral is worked first: it sets the limits the flowers are then fitted into, and it cannot be corrected later. From there the work moves from the large aster in the lower ring to the small berries at the edges.
