Description

Happy 8th of March (Women's Day) – 3 shows a handful of crocuses pushing through the snow: purple, yellow, white and pink cups against melting drifts.

What the picture shows

The flowers form a tight clump in the centre. Each cup is worked in vertical rows so the petals look ribbed: purple with a lilac edge, yellow with an amber shimmer, white with a pearl sheen, pink with a crimson vein. The leaves are sharp dark green strips fanning out in all directions, and snow lies below, worked in white with blue shadows. The upper part of the canvas — a watercolour blue-and-white ground with blurred flower shapes behind — stays as print. Most of the 10 colours go into the cups themselves. Each cup is easiest worked from the top down, so the rows follow the shape of the petal and the colours do not bleed between neighbouring flowers. The snow below is where white beads show relief best.
