Description

“Gentleman's set” hangs a hat, a tie and a moustache on a line, as if they had just been washed. The joke reads at first glance.

What the picture shows

The canvas is mint-turquoise with printed white clouds. Broad bands of checked cloth run across the top and bottom: the check is worked in beads — green, red, yellow and white lines crossing like a tartan rug — and most of the beading goes there. A thin black line is stretched across the middle, and three things hang from it: a black bowler hat, a red tie with a neat knot, and a black moustache. All three are filled in solidly, row after row, so they stand out against the flat ground. The words “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” stay printed in dark lilac letters, and the clouds and the turquoise ground are not beaded either. Seven bead colours in all.
