Description

Congratulations – 13 shows a wicker basket of garden flowers: pink phlox, orange blooms and a white daisy.

What the picture shows

The basket is worked in horizontal rows of golden and olive beads with the handle laid out separately, and it holds the centre of the piece. Pink and crimson flowers on thin stems lean out of it, an orange bloom glows at the lower left, and a white daisy with a yellow centre sits on the right. Green pods and small leaves worked as short strips are scattered around. The warm yellow ground with its white glow in the middle stays as print on the canvas. The 9 colours give a summery, slightly faded range with no harsh contrasts. The basket is worked in rows from the bottom up with the handle as a separate arch, and it accounts for most of the piece. The flowers are added afterwards, placed so the bunch neither flattens nor leans to one side.
