Description

Congratulations – 12 shows four red roses and a bud on a pale blue-green ground.

What the picture shows

The flowers form a tight ring in the centre. Each is worked as a spiral: the outer petals deep red, those nearer the heart a lighter red with an orange sheen, the rim traced in small beads for a crisp outline. A single bud stands apart on the upper right. The leaves are large and dark green with a pair of pale veins, and white specks of gypsophila are scattered between the blooms. The background — watercolour washes of blue, lime and white — stays as print and is deliberately left bare. Almost all 6 colours fall into the red and green groups. The roses are worked from the centre outwards, and each needs an even tension or the spiral twists and the bloom loses its shape. The gypsophila is added at the end as single beads, scattered unevenly.
