Description

“Wood fairy tale” — an owl peers out from behind the trunk of an old tree, with autumn maple leaves all around it. The picture is warm and quiet, in an ochre key.

What the picture shows

The owl is shown close up: rusty-brown speckled plumage, a finely mottled white breast, round yellow-green eyes and the characteristic ear tufts. It tilts its head slightly and looks straight at the viewer. Beside it, in the shadow of the hollow, another small fluffy shape can be made out. A slender branch of maple leaves — green, yellow and ochre — runs across the whole canvas on the left, and a few leaves lie at the bottom. The background is warm sandy yellow with almost no detail, and the rough bark of the trunk darkens on the right. The beading is partial: beads cover the owl, all the leaves and the branches, while the pale ground and the bark stay as print on the canvas.
