“Winter in the city” shows a snowy street at dusk, lights already burning in the windows and two figures standing under a lamp.

What the picture shows

A row of old houses runs along the right, their windows warm amber, with porches and steps; above them rises a corner building crowned by a tall green dome and a round lantern. On the left are trees furred with frost and strung with pink and lilac lights, and a wrought-iron fence. Two people in long coats stand in the middle of the snowy street, the lamp throwing a pool of gold at their feet. The sky is deep violet, the snow blue with pink reflections, and white dots are scattered everywhere — large flakes are falling. Beading is full: the whole field is covered in beads, sky, snow and façades alike.
