Description

“Watercolor poppies” sets three large poppies against a mottled watercolour ground. The colour here is loud, almost festive.

What the picture shows

The flowers are coral pink, with yellow-orange petal edges and dark veining; their centres are pale, ringed with stamens. The petals are crumpled and wavy-edged, and beside them sit green buds on curving stems and fine, cut foliage. The background is painted in broad watercolour patches — turquoise, crimson, yellow and lime runs flecked with white. Coverage is partial: the poppies, buds and leaves are worked in beads, while the coloured background stays printed on the canvas, and it is precisely that background that gives the piece its watercolour character. The poppies run on a diagonal from the lower right corner to the top, almost touching the edges of the picture. The drawing is large and generalised, with few small details, so the pattern is easy to follow.
