“Vivid town” — a southern town above a canal, built out of saturated planes of colour.

What the picture shows

The town runs down the slope to a narrow canal: houses in red, yellow, green, white and blue crowd against one another, with a bell tower and its sharp spire above them. On the left a stone bridge crosses the water in a wide arch, greenery glowing inside it. Boats are moored along the right bank; the water is pale and full of white reflections. Roses climb the façades and dark cypresses line the lane. In the foreground below, a cat has settled on the white cloth of a small table. Coverage is partial: beads fill the houses, the bridge, the boats, the flowers and the water, while the clouded sky and the distant hills stay painted on the canvas.
