What the picture shows

Terracotta and ochre façades crowd both banks, with arches, green shutters and balconies where geraniums glow red. A wide pale-stone arched bridge spans the canal, and the walls are reflected in the blue-turquoise water below it in small strokes. A dark gondola with the figure of a gondolier sits at the centre. On the right-hand embankment stands a basket of yellow and red flowers; on the left are a wooden door and steps running down to the water. A cathedral dome emerges from the haze in the distance. The beading is partial: beads cover the façades, the bridge, the balconies, the flowers, the gondola and the water, while the misty distance with the dome and the sky stay as print on the canvas.
