Description

“Treats” — a white horse leans in at the window and reaches for the sill, where wild flowers and two ripe pears are waiting. A homely scene with a touch of humour.

What the picture shows

On the right, filling almost the full height of the canvas, is the head of a dapple-grey horse with a pale mane and a dark red bridle set with studs. It has leaned in through the open window towards the sill. On the left hangs a white lace curtain with a broad patterned edge; on the sill lie a tied posy of yellow and lilac wild flowers and two yellow pears. Behind the horse a summer wood dissolves into green light. The stitching is partial: beads cover the lace of the curtain, the bridle, the mane and the outlines of the muzzle, the flowers, the pears, the sill and the greenery beyond the window, while the horse's face and the distant wood stay printed.
