What the picture shows

A white stone bridge with an arched span and openwork railings crosses quiet water. Two figures stand on it: a man in a dark coat and top hat, and a woman in a pale dress and white hat. A crimson tree blazes on the left, a golden crown hangs on the right, and pale sky shows between them. The banks are covered with green grass and yellow leaves; the arch and the trees are reflected in the water, and fallen leaves drift across the surface. Coverage is partial: beads go on the foliage, railings, stonework and the highlights on the water, while the figures, sky and water stay printed on the canvas. The picture divides in half: crowns and bridge above, water and reflection below. The figures are small, yet the lines of the railing converge on them, so the eye finds them at once.
