“The smell of autumn” shows a wide bouquet of dried grasses and seed heads in a low bowl standing on a dark wooden table.

What the picture shows

The bouquet spreads across almost the whole canvas: stems beaded with small blue and cream berries, fluffy thistle heads, bulrushes, seed spikes, golden flakes of dry leaf, dark cones and split seed pods. The colours are warm and muted — ochre, brown, cream — with cool blue flecks running through them. The bowl is low and rounded, dark, with vertical facets. A few fallen pods and nuts lie on the table in front of it. The background is smooth golden-olive, and the lower third is dark wood. Beading is partial: only the bouquet, the bowl and the scattered pods are worked in beads, while the golden ground and the tabletop stay printed on the canvas.
