Description

“The Journey” shows an old city street with a horse-drawn carriage under a flowered canopy and passers-by in long dresses and top hats.

What the picture shows

At the centre stands a carriage shaded by a parasol wound with pink and red flowers, drawn by a chestnut-and-white horse, with the driver in a pale hat on the box. In front on the left two people are talking — a woman in a long dress and hat and a man in a dark frock coat; behind them is a corner building under a blue awning and a flower stall buried in greenery. On the right a flight of steps leads up to a house with balconies, and two more figures come down them, the woman carrying a red umbrella. Deep in the frame a pale tower with a spire and a dome rise above the street, with trees on either side. The beading is partial: the trees, the façades, the awnings, the carriage and the steps are beaded, while the sky, the distant tower and the figures stay printed.
