Description

“The Firebird” shows a golden bird rising into a deep blue sky with its wings spread, scattering long fiery feathers.

What the picture shows

The bird is set on a diagonal and fills almost the whole field. The wings are raised and opened like a fan, the feathers drawn out into thin tongues of flame — yellow and gold with crimson and red tips. The long tail falls away and curls into several strands in the lower corner. The background is a deep blue and violet mass with smoky swirls, threaded with pale sparks. A palette of only eight colours is built on the contrast between warm gold and cold blue. The beadwork is partial: beads run along the feathers, the outlines of the wings and tail, and the bright sparks, while the blue background stays printed — which is exactly why the bird glows against the dark.
