“The Bright Sadness” — a ginger cat sits on the windowsill with its back to us, watching an autumn street. A quiet piece about waiting and the long light of late afternoon.

What the picture shows

The cat holds the centre of the canvas: a striped ginger back, flattened ears, long whiskers showing past its cheek. It sits on a broad pale sill in front of an open window. Beyond the glass is a city street: trees in yellow and orange leaf, buildings of red and pale brick, wires, and blue sky above the roofs. The wide white-and-blue window frame divides the view in two. The range is warm — ochre, rust and cool blue shadows. The stitching is partial: beads cover the cat, the frame, the sill and the glass of the right casement with its reflections, while the view beyond the window stays printed and reads as painted.
