“Sunny Flowers” — large yellow sunflowers against a summer sky. The view looks upward, the grass moves in the wind — a picture of the hottest day of the year.

What the picture shows

Five open blooms of different sizes fill almost the whole field: lemon-yellow petals with ochre shadows and dark burgundy centres ringed with green. The stems are sturdy, with big toothed leaves, and thick green grass with fine pale blades runs along the bottom. The background is a blue sky with broad white strokes of cloud that give way to meadow green below. The stitching is partial: beads cover the flowers, their centres, the stems, the leaves and a few blades of grass in the foreground, while the sky, the clouds and the blurred greenery behind stay printed, so the sunflowers step clearly forward.
