Description

“Singing irises” places pink and white irises over a large circle filled with blue spirals. The piece is decorative, almost ornamental.

What the picture shows

The flowers are drawn in dots and fine strokes: white-pink petals with yellow beards and small speckling, and sharp dark-green leaves. The irises are arranged around the circle — below, at the centre and at the upper right. Behind them lies a large disc in a gold rim, filled with blue and violet spiral curls on a crimson ground. Outside the circle the background is pale pink and blue, moving in soft waves. Coverage is partial: the flowers, leaves, spirals and the rim of the circle are worked in beads, while the outer background stays printed on the canvas. The composition is built on the circle: the flowers break past its edge and cross the golden rim, so the piece never looks static. The colours are clean and saturated — pink, blue, crimson and green — and the dotted brushwork recalls folk ornament.
