What the picture shows

The foreground is taken by stone parapets and steps overgrown with greenery; blue hydrangeas, white and crimson flowers bloom in pots and along the walls. A path runs beside the parapet towards the small town on the right, where pink and ochre tiled houses stand close together at the water's edge. In the bay are a dark sailing boat and a few smaller craft, with grey-blue mountains and a high pale sky behind them. The water is painted in broad strokes, with white glints of waves picked out over it in beads. The beading is partial: beads cover the terrace, the steps, the flowers, the greenery and the house on the right, while the sea, the mountains, the distant town and the sky stay as print on the canvas.
