Description

“Sea turtle” — a large turtle with a patterned shell swims among a shoal of brightly marked fish. The picture is vivid and a little like batik.

What the picture shows

The turtle's shell is divided into segments filled with patterns — circles, small squares, crosses and dots in terracotta, mustard and green — and edged with a row of lime-green beads. The flippers, head and tail are orange-red with dark blotches. Small fish with yellow and red stripes, white speckles and translucent fins swim all around, filling almost the whole field. The background is done in a fabric-painting manner: turquoise, green and yellow flowing into one another with fine dark veins like tiny cracks. The beading is partial: beads outline the turtle and the fish and pick out accents on the shell and fins, while the colourful background stays as print on the canvas.
