What the picture shows

The figure stands at the centre, turned slightly aside. Her pink hair is pinned up; she wears long earrings and a ruby pendant, and great butterfly wings with a golden-orange pattern and dark veins open behind her shoulders. The gown, in the same fiery tone, falls in broad folds, and the bodice is worked with fine ornament. The sky behind is pink with lilac clouds, and seven orange butterflies fly across it. The picture is set in a lilac art-nouveau frame: flowing scrolls, rings and small round stones in the corners. The stitching is partial: beads cover the frame, the wings, the gown, the butterflies and the jewellery, while the face, the shoulders and the sky stay printed.
