Description

“Purple haze” — branches of flowering lilac against a blurred blue-violet ground. The piece is soft and almost scented, like a misty morning in May.

What the picture shows

The composition is built from several large lilac panicles gathered into a full bouquet at the centre of the canvas. The florets are worked in two families of shade — warm crimson-pink and cool violet-lilac — which gives the clusters their volume. Between them sit big heart-shaped leaves in varied greens, from pale lime to deep emerald, with a few leaves bending downwards. The background is deliberately blurred: a blue-grey haze with faint silhouettes of further clusters. The beadwork is partial: beads fill the panicles and the leaves of the bouquet, while the misty blue background with its soft-focus flowers at the edges stays printed on the canvas.
