Description

“Picturesque peonies” is a bouquet of peonies in a white jug, painted in broad brushstrokes. The piece reads like a living oil painting.

What the picture shows

The bouquet holds several large blooms: a crimson peony on the left, deep pink and red buds above, and a creamy white flower at the centre. On the right a pale lilac-white chrysanthemum opens into a fan of narrow petals. The jug is white with blue and ochre reflections, and green leaves trail over its rim. The background is free brushwork in pink, crimson, yellow and turquoise, with a coloured shadow below and small berries lying on the table. Coverage is partial: beads go on the flowers, leaves, jug and a few accents in the background, while the broad brushstrokes themselves stay printed on the canvas. The picture is handled very freely: there is little fine detail, but plenty of open colour and visible movement of the brush. Here the beads work as a shimmer laid over the painting.
