«Overlooking the roofs» shows a girl in a wide hat swinging in a hammock with a book and a kitten, high above a town of tiled roofs.

What the picture shows

The hammock is strung across the whole upper part of the picture: a striped cloth with long lilac fringe, and on it a red-haired girl in a broad hat trimmed with flowers. A dark Siamese kitten sits on her lap; an open book is in her hands. Below spread the town roofs — ochre, terracotta and pink, with a bell tower and a clock tower on the right. Along the parapet in the foreground stand pots of flowers: pink geraniums, green leaves, a shrub of small blooms. The sky is pale blue with white clouds. The beadwork is partial: beads cover the hammock, the figure, the kitten, the flowers and the roofs, while the clouded sky stays painted on the canvas.
