“Meeting the Easter” — willow branches and a lit candle before two icons, a restrained pre-Easter subject.

What the picture shows

Two icons hang on a light wall: on the left the Mother of God with the Child in dark crimson robes, on the right Saint Nicholas in a mitre and golden vestments, holding the Gospel. Willow branches with soft silvery catkins spread widely in front of them and below; a candle burns at the lower left. The whole piece is held in a cool white-and-blue range, and the only warmth comes from the haloes, the gold of the vestments and the candle flame. Coverage is partial: beads fill the willow branches, the candle, the vestments and the blue ground, while the faces and hands on the icons stay printed on the canvas.
