“Meadow grasses” shows tall wild flowers on the shore of still water, painted lightly and transparently.

What the picture shows

The foreground is filled with blossoms on slender stems: pink umbels, lilac and crimson spikes, small blue and white flowers rising almost to the top edge. Thick green grass with yellow stalks shows between them. A gap is left in the middle, opening onto the calm water of a bay, with a low sandy-green shore and a band of hills beyond. The sky is pale blue with soft white clouds. The whole palette is pastel, without sharp contrasts. Coverage is partial: the flowers and grasses are beaded, while the sky, the water and the distant shore stay as print on the canvas.
