What the picture shows

The bouquet holds large anemones with dark centres, tulips with elongated petals, peony-like blooms, small sprigs of greenery and a few ears of wheat. The colours are soft — pink, lilac, cream, lemon and grey-green — and the background is a light, creamy field with almost no detail, so everything rests on the bouquet itself. A few petals have already fallen onto the table. The jug is plain, white and round, with a broad base. Coverage is partial: the central flowers, the foliage and part of the jug are beaded, while the pale ground and the muted buds at the edges stay printed, deliberately sinking into haze. The composition sits slightly to the left, leaving empty pale space on the right — and it is precisely that space which makes the picture so calm.
