“July heat” — a large sunflower head on a dark ground, surrounded by green shoots and small meadow flowers. The picture is saturated and almost ornamental, with the feel of a hot summer day.

What the picture shows

The centre is taken by a sunflower with two rows of yellow and ochre petals and a dark brown middle laid out in concentric rings. Green stems with leaves curl around it, together with white daisies and pale blue forget-me-nots. Insects sit in the corners: a striped bee at the upper left, a red ladybird at the right, a bronze beetle below and a pale butterfly in the lower right corner. The ground is deep black and stays as print, which makes the colours read brighter. The beadwork is partial: the sunflower, the greenery, the flowers and the butterfly are beaded, while the bee, the ladybird, the beetle and the black ground remain painted.
