Description

“Indian elephant” — an elephant in profile, covered head to foot with Indian floral ornament, on a deep violet ground. The design is festive and very colourful.

What the picture shows

The elephant walks from left to right with its trunk raised and curled. Its outline is traced with a line of pale beads, and the body inside is filled with dense mehndi-style pattern: yellow and green shoots, pink and lilac flowers, small rosettes, spirals and paisley drops. The ground is dark violet with blue shading and white spatters like star dust. A wavy pale-blue line of flowers and curls runs beneath the elephant, and blue blossoms are scattered to the right. The beadwork is partial: the elephant, the lower ornament and the spatters are beaded, while the violet ground stays as print on the canvas.
