What the picture shows

A large dome in shifting reds, oranges and crimsons stands at the centre, with smaller cupolas beside it and a bright pavilion strung with lanterns along its roof. The sky is deep violet-blue and scattered with white stars, and a yellow crescent hangs on the right. Below, the water throws the lights back in long bands of colour, while slender lamp poles rise across the whole canvas and curve down at the top. A yellow tower with pink and turquoise windows stands on the right. The palette is intensely saturated, almost without half-tones. The beading is partial: beads cover the domes, the lanterns, the stars, the outlines of the poles and the reflections on the water, while the painted background with its open strokes stays as print on the canvas.
