What the picture shows

A large bouquet stands in a low white bowl on a pale table: cream-yellow roses and peonies at the centre, surrounded by a cloud of small lilac, violet and pink blooms, green leaves and slender stems. The painting is impressionist, with visible brushwork: the outlines of the flowers are blurred and light highlights are scattered across the whole canvas, as though sunlight were passing through the bouquet. The background is pale lilac, turning almost white at the bottom where the bowl casts a soft shadow. Coverage is partial: beads fill the flowers, the leaves and the bowl, while the blurred background stays painted on the canvas.
