What the picture shows

A cupcake stands at the centre of a cream field: a pink dome of icing dotted with sprinkles, a strawberry with a green top above it and a striped multicoloured case below. Hearts, small flowers, snowflakes and scrolls are scattered around, and the beaded greeting «HAPPY BIRTHDAY!» runs beneath the cupcake. The picture is framed by a band of squares — red, blue, green, yellow and turquoise — each holding its own motif: a gift, a heart, a cherry, a flower, a butterfly. The beadwork is partial: beads form the cupcake, the lettering, all the small motifs and the patterns inside the squares, while the cream field and the coloured squares themselves stay printed on the canvas.
