Description

“Frosty Morning” shows a tit on a snowy pine branch among three large cones.

What the picture shows

The bird sits at the centre, side on to the viewer: a blue-grey wing, a dark cap, a white cheek and a yellowish breast. Below it, filling almost the whole foreground, lie three open pine cones in warm brown, dusted with snow. Around them are thick tufts of long pine needles, green with a hoary bloom, and a few small cones in the top left corner. The background is a light, warm beige, like morning sun through the branches. The branches converge towards the middle, so the eye lands straight on the cones and the bird above them. The beading is dense and almost continuous: the branches, the needles, the snow, the cones and the bird itself are all covered, and only narrow strips of blurred beige background at the edges stay printed on the canvas.
