“Flowers of Paris” — a bouquet of roses in a painted cachepot against old floral fabric, in a restrained pink and cream range.

What the picture shows

At the centre stands a golden cachepot with an oval cameo medallion, holding a bouquet of large roses and peonies in crimson, pink, cream and pale blue. One more pink rose lies apart on the shelf to the left. The background is light ivory, printed with a large pale-pink floral in the spirit of old toile fabric. A blue-and-white ornamental grille with scrollwork runs along the bottom. Coverage is partial: beads fill the flowers, the cachepot, the shelf and the lower ornament, while the background with its faded floral pattern stays painted on the canvas — and that contrast between the vivid and the faded is what holds the composition together.
