What the picture shows

The girl sits with her eyes closed in a blue pinafore, hugging the kitten; her hair is gathered into a bun tied with a pink ribbon. On the left a large grey cat with full whiskers watches her with round yellow eyes. The background is a soft green-olive thicket with thin branches where small birds perch; firefly lanterns hang between the branches on long threads, and a yellow circle like a moon glows above. On the table below lie small things: a candle, a little box, a flower. The beading is partial: beads cover the pinafore, the kitten, the hair, the fireflies, the branches and the whole foreground, while the girl's face, the grey cat and the painted background stay as print on the canvas.
