Description

“Embrace Paris” — a couple embracing under a red umbrella on a Paris embankment. Wet cobbles, a lamp hung with flowers, and the city blurred by rain behind them.

What the picture shows

At the centre stand a woman in a deep red coat and hat and a man in a beige raincoat, close together under a burgundy umbrella. Behind them a bridge crosses the river, and beyond it the silhouette of the city rises with towers and spires, painted in soft pink-grey strokes. To the right stands a wrought-iron lamp post with two hanging baskets of pink flowers; below are a café table, pigeons on the wet cobbles and long streaks of colour reflected in them. A shrub greens the left edge. The stitching is partial: beads cover the umbrella, the figures, the lamp post with its flowers, the embankment railing, the table and the shrub, while the city, the sky and the reflections on the cobbles stay printed.
