What the picture shows

An invented town of dozens of little houses, churches and towers fills the whole canvas. They stand tightly stacked one above another, almost without perspective: onion domes, arched windows, gables, porches, round trees between the roofs. The dominant colours are honey-gold and ochre, with touches of blue, green and white; the sky above is deep red, and the image is framed at the top and sides by an ornamental band of scrollwork. Every detail is outlined in dots, as if painted with a fine brush. Coverage is full: beads cover the entire field, including the red sky and the border.
