Description

“Date in the Rain” — he has swept her up in his arms right on the stone steps of an old town, and a big red umbrella is open above them. It is raining, and neither of them minds.

What the picture shows

The scene is built on a diagonal: the steps climb from the lower left to the upper right, and the couple stands on them. The man, in dark clothes, holds the woman in his arms; she is barefoot in a pale dress, her sandals in her hand. Above them a bright red umbrella opens — the strongest patch of colour in the piece. Around them are the walls of old houses in warm sandy tones, a deep red wall at the upper left, a wrought-iron rail along the steps and thick green shrubs on either side. Pale streaks of rain cross the whole canvas at an angle. The stitching is partial: beads cover the umbrella, the figures, the rail, the steps, the shrubs and the walls, while the upper sky and the far lane stay printed.
