“Couple” — two Yorkshire terriers lie side by side on a stone parapet above a pond.

What the picture shows

Their coats are long and silky: grey-blue along the back, golden russet on the head and on the paws they have let hang over the edge. Behind them are a garden gate, an arch overgrown with greenery, hydrangea bushes in pink and white, and tall blue delphiniums. Below lies dark water with lily pads and white water lilies. Coverage is partial, and handled in an interesting way: the flowers, lily pads, water and stonework are beaded, while the dogs themselves stay as the painted print — next to the shine of the beads their fur looks especially soft. Fifteen colours cover the whole floral surround, and most of them go into the hydrangeas, where pink, lilac and white sit side by side.
