Description

“Chrysanthemums” — a generous bouquet of small pink chrysanthemums in a glass vase against pale drapery. The piece is quiet and light, with almost no harsh contrast.

What the picture shows

The bouquet fills nearly the whole field. Small chrysanthemums, from pale pink to deep magenta with yellow centres, are scattered through the whole spray, with fresh green leaves and slender stems between them. The vase is glass with a bluish gleam, and a few fallen blooms lie on the pale cloth beside it. The background is painted in broad, soft strokes: pearl-white drapery with lilac and cream shadows. The stitching is partial: beads cover the flowers themselves, the leaves and the outline of the vase with its highlights, while the drapery, the folds of cloth and the blurred shadows stay printed, so the bouquet looks rounded and lit from within.
