Description

“Christmas Eve” shows a snow-covered village at night, with warm light in the windows and a decorated fir tree.

What the picture shows

Two log houses stand in the foreground under deep caps of snow: the walls are a warm honey tone, the windows glow yellow, and a chimney rises from the roof. On the right there is a full fir tree hung with red, blue and gold baubles, surrounded by dark green snow-laden spruces. At the lower left a wooden footbridge crosses a frozen stream, with a leafless bush beside it. The sky is blue and lilac, with the moon and thick falling snow. The beading is partial: beads cover the houses, trees, snow, bridge and snowflakes, while the night sky and the blurred trees behind stay painted on the canvas.
